Gideon Denison family papers, 1791-1802.

The collection consists of three letter books and one account book of the Denison family from 1791-1802. One letter book (1791-1792) of Gideon Denison relates to his Savannah (Ga.) trade business. The letters discuss trade business with merchants in Augusta (Ga.), Baltimore (Md.), Charleston (S.C.), London (England), and Philadelphia (Pa.) and include information on cargo shipments, purchase of ships, slavery, and the slave trade. This letter book also contains letters from Gideon's brother Ezra. The 1797-1799 letter book contains letters from Gideon Denison describing his 1797 voyage to England and the 1798 return, the sale of land in North Carolina and Tennessee, Indian treaties, and financial problems. The account book (1796-1799) contains entries pertaining to the management of Gideon's Lion Hill Farm (Havre de Grace, Md.) including accounts for free and slave labor; purchases of livestock, slaves, food and clothing; and taxes. The collection also includes a letter book (1801-1802) of Henry Denison containing business letters relating to settling the estates of Ezra and Gideon as well as personal family correspondence.
